Apollo/Advanced Range Instrumentation Aircraft Newsletter
ARIA 328 Memorial Foundation - March 2009

Newsletter

The goal of the ARIA newsletter is two-fold. I want to keep you informed on the progress of the ARIA 328 Memorial Foundation and provide news that impact the ARIA Alumni and friends of ARIA. I appreciate all of you that have continued to receive the newsletter.

As you probably can tell there is not a fixed format for the newsletter. The newsletter is here for you to utilize and is not limited to the topics that you have seen so far. If you would like to write on a specific topic, share an experience, or if you need information contact me for inclusion into the newsletter. This would also include non "ARIA" events that may be of interest to the alumni or service members.

800

To me the number 800 looked like a big number until I made comparisons.

800 beans don't make a very big pot of soup. 800 words double spaced makes about a two and a half page document. 800 pennies can make it difficult to buy a dinner at my local hangout. If you like Starbucks coffee you know that 800 pennies may not go a long way, needless to say I don't frequent Starbucks. 800 miles is a drop in the bucket to the miles I drive monthly.

To be continued...

Kenny Hauprich Junior

I was contacted by Ken Hauprich in mid February; Ken was with the 4953d at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. In the conversations that we have had the conversation came up about the loss of his son Senior Airman Kenny Hauprich Junior. Kenny was killed in a Blackhawk crash on November 8, 2007 in northern Italy. He was on an incentive ride with the Army. Kenny videotaped his flight and because of his videotape cleared the Army pilots of any wrong doing.

Ken asked me who to contact at the National Museum of the Air Force for an inclusion of a memorial for his son in the memorial park. I was not able to give him the best course of action for his request. I know that there have been a number of ARIA alumni that have worked with the National Museum of the Air Force in various capacities. Please contact Ken Hauprich at kphsr@yahoo.com with any information that could guide him in the best course of action with the National Museum of the Air Force.

Thank You

In finishing up the EC-135 ARIA Aircraft pages on flyARIA.com I came to the realization that I only had one picture of ARIA Aircraft 62-4133 as an ARIA. Paul Hasz provided the picture of 62-4133 just three months ago. Thank you again Paul.

I appreciate the time that Paul and others have taken to provide information donations to the flyARIA.com web site. I know other alumni appreciate it also.

ARIA Test Crew #1

It doesn't happen often but this past month I incurred a hard drive crash; it was one of my 0.5 terabyte drives. I have spent a few days rebuilding the file system restoring data on a replacement drive. Everything is back up and operating normally. All ARIA information donations are backed up automatically onsite and offsite to protect the ARIA heritage.

As I was reviewing all of the donated pictures for ARIA I remembered something in the collection that I did not have. On the flyARIA.com web site there is a picture of the Bendix Field Engineering Corporation flight test crew number two. They were called crew number two because the Air Force crew was designated crew number one.

I know that there is a picture of the Air Force crew number one in existence. However, I have not been able to get a copy for the flyARIA.com web site. If you have a copy or know of someone that does please consider donating the picture to be displayed on the flyARIA.com web site.

ARIA 2011 Memorial Service and Reunion

We have received limited feedback for the 2011 memorial service and reunion. Even if you won't be able to join us, let us know your thoughts on what would make the reunion special. Please take time to fill out the online reunion form on the ARIA Memorial web site. We want to hear your feedback on this event. Two years may seem like a long time, but 2011 will be here before we know it.

The flyARIA.com web site has been updated with over 350 pictures from previous reunions.

I have placed a countdown clock on the flyARIA.com web site for the 2011 reunion. Currently, the clock is set with a countdown date of May 6, 2011. The clock will be updated when the final reunion date is set.

Be Careful Searching for ARIA/ARIA 328/ARIA 328 Memorial

Ok, I have to admit it. I like Google. Google search has been my friend when it has come to searching for information. A feature for Google Search that anyone can use with a Google mail account is receiving the results of searches by others defined by your own keywords, Google Search Alerts. You don't know who clicked a specific link but you do get the result of that link. You never know, I may have missed something in the wild (internet) about ARIA.

There seems to be a growing tendency of web sites that actively index as many "keywords" as possible to point the person with any search to their website. I have followed many of these links that I receive from the Google Search Alerts that have resulted in the web site trying to infect my system with a variety of different exploits, malware, or viruses. I see a lot of "ARIA 328" searches among others pointing to less than legitimate web sites. Be careful out there!

Military Memorial

ARIA 328 Memorial Service May 6, 2009

Service will start at 10:30 a.m. at the ARIA 328 Memorial, National Museum of the Air Force, Dayton, Ohio. After the service, we will gather at Clancy's for a fellowship luncheon. If you have questions please contact Randy Losey for more information.

Remembering Demon 51: June 8, 2009

Air Force officials dedicated a memorial Jan. 13 at the Museum of Military History in Jacksonville, Ark., to the six airmen who perished in the crash of an Arkansas Air National Guard C-130 transport during a training flight June 8, 1988. The aircraft, assigned to the 189th Airlift Wing at Little Rock AFB, Ark., went down near Greenville, Miss., killing Maj. Andy Zwaan, 2nd Lt. Mark Brandt, 2nd Lt. Thomas Leece, MSgt. Ed Smith Jr., MSgt. Danny Holland, and SSgt. David Bingham. About 150 family members, friends, and current and former military members were on hand for the dedication to the crew of the aircraft, which had the call sign Demon 51. The memorial includes a plaque with the six airmen's photos and a single propeller blade from one of the aircraft's engines.

flyARIA.com Web Site Updates

I have completed the Aircraft section on the site with the exception of the EC-18 aircraft at this time.

One of the issues that I have had with displaying images in the past was that the user was not kept on the original web page when viewing the images.

I have included a rotating viewer on all pages with multiple images. If you place your cursor over the image you will be displayed a control panel to manually click through each image. If you are using a compatible browser you can see the images at full screen. Normally, you will see the control panel displayed in the image when arriving on the web page.

The EC-18’s are due to be completed in March.

Please review the aircraft information and provide feedback on incorrect information shown. If you have additional information please contact me.

Bendix Radio

Bendix Radio Corporation was the subcontractor for the electronics on board the original ARIA Aircraft. http://www.flyaria.com/bendixradio-1.html.

There are a number of images in the Bendix Radio gallery that have not seen the light of day for decades. There are a few ARIA alumni that have not been identified. We need to identify them.

There was not a lot of information about the ARIA A-LOTS program, until now. You can find out more in the A-LOTS section in the Bendix Radio Gallery.

We Still Need You

Funding is not our only need for the success of the construction of the ARIA 328 Memorial. We need volunteers. What can you do to help? It is as easy as contacting and following up with ARIA Alumni to spread the news of the memorial. We need experienced grant writers to allow us the opportunity to tap all resources available for funding. We need leaders to create and coordinate teams to contact ARIA Alumni and to head a “Think Tank” to generate ideas and methods to raise funds. Don’t think you can help? Contact us; I am confident that we can use you.

Silent Flyer

You can make the ARIA community aware of the passing, and funeral arrangements, of our Alumni by submitting the information through the Silent Flyer form on the ARIA Memorial web site. A special Silent Flyer email will be sent to all subscribers of the ARIA Newsletter with the information.

We are missing a lot of faces to the names in the Silent Flyer Memorial. If you have a photo of a silent flyer, please consider sending a copy to the ARIA 328 Memorial Foundation for inclusion into the web site.

ARIA Information Request

There is going to be an Apollo X 40th anniversary held here at Tinker AFB on 20 May 09. Could you/another alumni send information on ARIA's involvement in Apollo X missions.
